The genre of Dave Barry's Lost in the Kitchen is satire. I really liked this work of satire because it is written by the perpetrator of a problem, while other satire is from that same point of view, yet written by someone who is making fun of them.
Barry admits that he can't understand the workings of the kitchen like his wife does, and he also admits that this is awful. He even admits that he gets distracted from watching his children when a football game is on. Even though Barry uses humor, he is honest and pokes fun at himself. I have never read satire before where the author points out flaws in themselves, so this was very entertaining and interesting to read.
I saw a lot of similarities in real life to what was written about in this passage. At first I thought that there were fallacies because the author includes gender role stereotypes, but he was writing about his own personal life so I'm sure that he was just being candid and not trying to use prejudice. For example, in his writing the women do the cooking at Thanksgiving while the men get distracted from watching their children and end up focusing on the Detroit Lions' football game. By including this personal anecdote about a Thanksgiving he experienced, the author is using ethos which is important to get his point across to the audience. Overall I really liked the way that he wrote this satire because it was honest and unique.
