The genre of William F. Buckley Jr.'s Why We Don't Complain is political article. I was surprised at the truisms I encountered in reading this article. Buckley deeply examines human nature's change over the recent decades and cast it into unfavorable light. His use of personal anecdotes enables the audience to connect with their own lives that what he claims about society happens all around. His tone is raw and objective. Even with this tone, Buckley manages to convey his opinions and narratives with a masterful use of imagery.
The rhetorical question used as the title opens the subject in a way that the reader can connect it to themselves. Buckley used this device to get his audience to really analyze the scenarios he implements and to use it as a call to action for people to complain when necessary. This passage is written for all Americans, the purpose is to convince them of the importance of using their voices to make positive changes. I assume this because the author doesn't single out a single group of people, just Americans as a whole. The author uses a couple modes of discourse including narrative and political analysis. These are used jointly to make the political aspect of the writing more interesting and credible with examples.
